Update from case Detective: Regarding the murder trial for retired SLMPD Sergeant Ralph Harper. At 1:00pm this afternoon (9/18/23), the defendant pled guilty to Murder 2nd Degree, Robbery 1st Degree and two counts of Armed Criminal Action. As part of a plea agreement with the State, he was sentenced to 20 years on the Murder 2nd Degree charge, 15 years on the Robbery 1st Degree charge and 6 years on the two Armed Criminal Action charges with the terms to be run concurrently. The Harper family was present in the courtroom and heard the defendant admit his responsibility in the fatal shooting. They are thankful for the support from the SLMPD and are relieved to finally have a conclusion to this tragic incident.

The El Paso Municipal Police Officers’ Association sadly announces the passing of Retired Detective Alfonso "Al" Marquez #314, who passed away on September 13, 2023, at the age of 74. Retired Detective Marquez served with the El Paso Police Department for 25+ years, from January 1972 until his retirement on February 14, 1997.
Community met with four finalists for El Paso Police Chief

On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the community was invited to meet and hear from the finalists for the El Paso Police Chief position. The four finalists are Steve Dye, Peter Pacillas, David Ransom and Victor Zarur. Steve Dye was the Police Chief for Grand Prairie, Texas from 2011 to 2020 where he was also the deputy city manager and is currently the city manager.

Retired Officer Ramos served with the El Paso Police Department for 21+ years, from June 1968 until his retirement on December 11, 1989.

Jury finds Facundo Chavez guilty of shooting, killing Deputy Peter Herrera

A jury found Facundo Chavez guilty of capital murder for the killing of El Paso County Sheriff's Deputy Peter Herrera. The jury deliberated for about 40 minutes after hearing closing arguments Thursday morning. Chavez shot and killed Herrera during a traffic stop in San Elizario on March 22, 2019. His sentencing will be on Friday at 9 a.m.
26th Annual EPMPOA Golf Tournament

The golf tournament is the police association's fundraiser to benefit the EPMPOA Ben Ayala Scholarship Fund.
Del Sol Medical Center honors fallen El Paso Police officer

A Hero Walk was held at Del Sol Medical Center on Friday to honor fallen El Paso Police Officer Fernando De La Torre. The cause of De La Torre's death was not provided. Officer De La Torre's family along with staff at Del Sol Medical Center quietly lined the walls of the hospital to honor the patient and show respect for his family.

He was shot early Saturday morning, July 15, 2023, while assisting other officers in locating a vehicle that fled during a traffic stop in Alamogordo.

Attorney Renewal Contract

All, Please see the attached proposed contract renewal from our retained law firm (Vick, Julius, McClure).  The rate is $2946 per month, which is the same rate as our last contract.    As this is a 3-year contract and the largest expenditure we pay (nearly $36k per year), I find it appropriate to put this out to all members.

A Texas bill that was signed into law Monday will switch temporary paper license plates provided at car dealerships and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles with metal plates. House Bill 718 was proposed in response to concerns "that the current use of temporary paper license tags for motor vehicles could facilitate fraud and other criminal activity.

El Paso officer injured after trying to prevent thief from fleeing outside of Walmart

An El Paso police officer was injured after he was trying to prevent a thief from fleeing outside a Walmart in northeast El Paso. The incident happened Saturday around 9:25 a.m. at the Walmart located at 5632 Dyer. An 11-year-old veteran officer was working extra duty security at Walmart when a man walked out of the store without paying for some items. The items were valued at over $300.
